The Real Money Auction House: Opportunity Knocks

As the beta rolls on, improvements to the game continue to be made. One such aspect that got a little bit of love in beta patch 6 is the Auction House. I posted my initial thoughts on the RMAH a couple months ago but now that we have more information, I’d like to delve a bit deeper.

First, I would like to say that I’m an avid supporter of the RMAH. As I mentioned in my previous post about the auction house, the worst things about Diablo 2 were mainly caused by the third party item selling companies. Having a controlled environment to buy and sell will help prevent many of those issues from reoccurring. However, other factors that play into my thoughts on the subject: I made a bit of money from Diablo 2 and used to work for Blizzard.

Now, I know what you’re all thinking… yes, I said that I made money from D2. Not much, but enough to fund my dates with my then girlfriend who is now my wife. Oh, and I worked for Blizzard for 4 years (and I am by no means a voice of authority for the company). But lets get back to the topic at hand.

From a money making perspective, I believe that the D3 AH will have more earning potential than all the third party sites from D2 combined. The main reasons for this are trust and accessibility. The need for an eBay account or giving your credit card information to an unsecured website is a thing of the past. In fact, you don’t even need a PayPal account to reap the rewards of the RMAH.

However, much like any business opportunity, those with the entrepreneurial spirit will be the most effective. To be a successful player on the RMAH, you’re going to have to do your research and put in more effort than you may realize as making any decent amount of money will take more than just farming. But that isn’t to say normal/casual players won’t be able to earn a few bucks. I suspect that the quality of items on the RMAH will be very similar to what we used to see on eBay in D2; so you can cash in on that lucky drop from time to time, sell your gold, or list your characters.

As for me? My wife likes nice things, so you’ll be seeing me on the RMAH quite a bit.

If your wife likes nice things she should play the game! Well, at least she can’t prevent you from playing, “Hey honey, it’s Diablo 2 that brought us together, remember?”

I’m glad I discovered your blog. I added you to my blogroll.
